The ACCENTUATOR for Word 97
is a new typing utility for Greek monotonic and polytonic texts.
Available for Windows '98, Windows '95, Windows NT 4.0, Windows Me and
Windows 2000.
It works through MS-Word 97 and it uses Unicode fonts.
This means that it follows the internationally accepted standard for the
Greek polytonic character set, as it was encoded by the Unicode
Consortium which is the definitive encoding standard permitting the
compatibiity in all platforms amongst fonts that are created by different
manufacturers .
At launch, the ACCENTUATOR launches
MS-Word 97. As you type a text, the ACCENTUATOR
replaces the characters with Greek polytonic or monotonic ones.
Polytonic typing is made very easy.
The consonants and the non-accented vowels are inserted in the same was
as in the monotonic system which you already use.
For each breathing, accent or combination of the two, the ACCENTUATOR
uses a certain key which can be defined by the user. When you press a
breathing or accent key no character is inserted. If following that you
press a vowel key then you will have a vowel with the breathing or the
accent you had chosen.
With the ACCENTUATOR, you can produce the following breathings,
accents and combinations:
1. Acute accent.
2. Smooth breathing & acute.
3. Smooth breathing & grave.
4. Smooth breathing & circumflex.
5. Rough breathing.
6. Rough breathing & acute.
7. Rough breathing & acute.
8. Rough breathing & circumflex.
9. Acute accent.
10. Grave accent.
11. Diaeresis.
12. Diaeresis & acute.
13. Diaeresis & grave.
14. Diaeresis & circumflex.
15. Long vowel.
16. Short vowel.
17. Circumflex.
18. Iota subscript.
19. Semicolon.
The above breathings, accents and combinations are produced according
to the rules that apply to vowel accentuation, including the "r" (rho)
with the grave or acute accent.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
The ACCENTUATOR comes with a number of tools which
make it easy to customize it and facilitate the insertion of special characters
which are useful in Greek texts.
The extra functions are the following:
Hyphenation of polytonic texts.
You can select part or all of the polytonic text and the ACCENTUATOR will
"scan" the selection and hyphenate each word according to the
rules of Greek grammar.
You will notice that when a word is at the end of a line it will break
into two parts.
Thus you can avoid the big spaces between words (especially when your
alignment is justified) and improve the aesthetics of your documents.
This is a unique feature of the ACCENTUATOR's professional version, as
it is the only application which hyphenates polytonic Greek texts.
Conversion of polytonic texts in older polytonic formats.
The ACCENTUATOR for MS-Word uses Unicode fonts. If in the past
you have used a different polytonic format, then these texts are not compatible
with Unicode fonts. In order to rectify this problem you have to convert
them.
|
The ACCENTUATOR
can perform this conversion in an easy and quick way so that you
may continue processing your old texts. The ACCENTUATOR
can convert texts from a) MAGENTA's ACCENTUATOR
1.0 for Windows 3.1 & 95, b) Apple's polytonic format
as it is used in Apple Macintosh computers, and c) GR-SOFT's polytonic
format, d) the Super Greek polytonic format, and e)
the GreekKeys polytonic format.
The conversion of texts from Apple Macintosh and GR-SOFT formats can only
be done through external text files.
The conversion of texts from MAGENTA's ACCENTUATOR 1.0, Super
Greek and GreekKeys can now be done directly from Word,
hence simplifying the whole process (you just have to open your old text
and select "conversion") and preserving to a great extent the
original formatting.
This is a very important feature of the ACCENTUATOR, especially
when a document contains monotonic and polytonic Greek or passages in
other languages because it can "scan" the text, find the polytonic
passages and convert them.
Export of polytonic texts in
professional accentuator format aand with Unicode fonts, for processing
in older polytonic formats.
As Word is the only program which can process Unicode polytonic texts,
there are certain limitations as far as pagination and printing are concerned.
For example, you may write and article or a text with a view of
giving it to a publisher for further processing by DTP packages. Publishing
houses might use Apple Macintosh computers or PCs but they all use an
application like QuarkXPres or Adobe Page Maker. These applications could
not process Unicode polytonic texts. However, they can now process polytonic
texts in MAGENTA's ACCENTUATOR 1.0 format or Apple Macintosh format.
Thus, with the export of polytonic Unicode texts, you can have your original
texts in Unicode in order to maintain forward compatibility whilst at
the same time you can export your texts in formats which are compatible
with DTP applications.
Find and Replace of polytonic words and phrases.
With Word you can find or/and replace words and phrases
in a document. This function is performed through a small window that
appears when you select Edit / Find.
However, Word alone will not suffice in order to use polytonic words in
this window. The professional ACCENTUATOR adds this feature to Word.
You can toggle the keyboard with
a custom keyboard shortcut. Thus, when you type in Greek you can use this
keyobard shortcut in order to type in English or use the characters of
a different language without having to change the font.
Insertion of special symbols and characters
which are included in the fonts but cannot produced
through the keyboard. Such characters are e.g. currency symbols, the copyright
symbol, upper and lower numerals, coptic symbols, etc.
Creation of new keyoboards, that is to say your favourite keyboard shortcuts
for the production of breathings, accents and combinations of the two.
Thus, you can customize the ACCENTUATOR in the manner that is most convenient
to you.
Customizing the keyboard shortcut which launches and closes the
ACCENTUATOR. If this shortcut is already used by a different
program or is not convenient, you can create a new one.
Changing the interface language.
If your Greek is not good enough or your PC does not support it
you can see all ACCENTUATOR messages and menus in English.
